Massachusetts Driver Alcohol Education Programs
What is an alcohol education program?
An alcohol education program focuses on alcohol abuse prevention and counseling, education and/or treatment. Driver alcohol education programs must be approved by the Mass Dept. of Public Health. If you are facing a 1st time DUI in Massachusetts, your OUI attorney can request a 24D disposition which resolves your case by requiring alcohol education instead of jail time and fines.
The 24D can be negotiated as an alternative sentencing disposition that is technically not a criminal conviction. Another benefit is that you can immediately apply for a Massachusetts hardship driver’s license under the 24D program.
If convicted of 1st or 2nd offense DUI, the court can also order a driver alcohol education program (and/or treatment) under 24D as part of the conditions of your probation.
How much does the 24D program cost?
The 24D program has two costs: 1) driver alcohol education program cost + 2) court fee for the assignment to probation. The cost for the alcohol education program is around $600. You will also need to pay the court a one-time fee of $250.
How long is the alcohol education program?
The driver alcohol education runs 16 weeks for a total of 40 hours of class time. Classes in the program consist of assessment, self-help meetings, education and victim impact panels.
